Zup: Newsletter for February 2010
Dear Colleagues and Friends of Free and Open Sources in and for Education:
This is the first newsletter of http://flossed.org for 2010 -- a long time coming.
A number of you were at the conference which KIS International School hosted in Bangkok last year (Halloween!). That date was chosen as appropriate to the anniversary of the famous Microsoft Halloween Letters. http://catb.org/~esr/halloween/index.html -- a good read for a laugh and background info.

Open Admin on Virtual Box
I have a version of Open Admin for Schools 4.5 running on VirtualBox.
This will allow anyone using Windows and other O/S's
to be able to run Open Admin fairly easily. We don't have any
instructions yet for the Virtual Box setup although these should be
available shortly.

Here's an interesting one posted on schoolforge-discuss. It's called "Robin Good's Collaborative Map" and it's on MIndmeister.com:

Children on-line all day? How 'bout you?
The New York Times published a report on a study of American children "ages 8 to 18" that says they are now on-line more than 7.5 hours per day -- "And that does not count the hour and a half that youths spend texting, or the half-hour they talk on their cellphones."
Patches for IE Google Exploit
In the spirit of helping the poor folks who insist on using IE, here's an interesting one:
A patch against the "alleged" Chinese exploit on Google and others. Is MS coming clean?
"The patch is now available via Windows Update (it's trickling out) and on the Microsoft Download Center. Here are all the links you need:"

MLKing Day a Model to Follow?
Martin Luther King was inspired by Gandhi who was inspired by Tolstoy and Thoreau. Peaceful action is an international idea. In the US, the White House is calling for Free and Open Source developers and users to participate in community education projects on MLKing Day. Perhaps in each country there is an equivalent that could be celebrated? Here's the blurb from http://www.serve.gov/mlkday_tech.asp which obviously uses a non-community-friendly OS:
